C-Max
Reliable, economical, comnfortable, good build quality, fit 5 adults comfortably, big boot, servicing etc reasonable, cruises motorways well enough, small enough when parking, handles well.
All in all does everything well. There bigger/smaller cars, there are faster cars, there are more prestigious cars, biut the C-Max is a great 'compromise' car, ie a great family car.

Dunno about Brit prices, but I bought a 2-year old Camry Auto SW (3.2 litre) back in 2001 and it's still going like the clappers with 450,000 kms on the clock. Properly serviced on time and never had a single problem (from memory 2 routine cambelts in that time, maybe 3?). Wanna be flash and waste money, buy a Range Rover. I'll stick to my trusty Toyotas and have enough dosh left over to travel the world.

Qashqai, hold their money well and have quite a bit of kit on them
Either that or buy new, use some of the 15k for a deposit and the rest for holidays. If you can hold off another month salesman will be handing out deals in August as they have high targets to meet for the new 65 plates in Sept

On the face of it spandex lease idea is the way to go. But in 3 years time if things have gone tits for you then instead of a 350 a month bill you can just keep your fully paid motor for an extra couple years. If things have gone proper tits up for you the option to sell the motor and use your cash to bail yourself out is there.
I've always got an eye on disaster and went down this route myself. Buy a decent motor 3 years old with about 50k on the clock and upgrade in yr 5 or 6. Best way to minimise vehicle depreciation.

For kids and dog Skoda Superb, its an Audi A6 without the badge and better to drive, Trust me I have had both and the A6 is great if you want to pay the money to be an Audi driver. If you cant get past the badge then the VW Passat Four Track is another great car. Nothing special bit has what you need. I have 2 kids and a dog and swap cars every six months because of my job and the Skoda estates are excellent value for money and have loads of extras and space.

Does life get so boring than when you want to buy a car a major consideration is getting 2 dogs in the back?!

Al,
Don't look any further than a Honda CR-V. You will pick up a really nice one for £15K. Go for the 2.2 Cdti engine, bags of room for kids and two dogs in the back, 40 mpg, drives brilliantly and has unmatchable Honda reliability !

Good cars. It's only badge snobbery by the uneducated that means there's not more of them on the road.
